Founders and history

Concept diagram for what is anthropic
Concept diagram for what is anthropic

Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei are central to Anthropic’s origin. Dario is co-founder and CEO. Daniela is co-founder and president. Anthropic’s own announcements are collected in the Anthropic news archive, which is the clearest official source for company milestones.

Several early employees came from OpenAI. That history helps explain why Anthropic puts unusual emphasis on governance, interpretability, evaluations, red-teaming, and deployment thresholds. It does not make Anthropic an academic institute or a neutral standards body. Anthropic is a commercial lab. Its stated distinction is that safety work should sit inside model development, not only after a model is ready to ship.

What Anthropic actually makes

Abstract scene of using Claude AI
Abstract scene of using Claude AI

Anthropic makes the Claude ecosystem: apps, models, API access, coding tools, workplace features, and trust resources. Availability can depend on plan, region, account type, and rollout status.

  • Claude for everyday use. Claude is the assistant people use in the browser, mobile apps, and desktop apps. It handles writing, analysis, planning, coding help, document review, and question answering. See our Claude features guide for the user-facing tools around Projects, files, Research, integrations, and collaboration.
  • Claude models. Anthropic’s model lines include Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku for different mixes of capability, latency, and cost. The official model reference lives in the Claude model docs. Our Claude models guide explains when each family fits.
  • Claude API. Developers can call Claude for chat, agents, analysis workflows, internal software, and customer-facing products. Official developer material is published at docs.claude.com and in the platform pricing docs. Our Claude API guide covers practical architecture choices.
  • Claude Code. Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding tool for repository and terminal workflows. It is useful when you want Claude to help plan, inspect, test, and apply code changes rather than only answer programming questions in chat. Our Claude resources page collects related workflow references.
  • Plans, seats, and usage tiers. Anthropic sells Claude through free access, individual subscriptions, higher-usage tiers, team workspaces, and enterprise contracts. The official plan page is claude.com/pricing. Our Claude pricing guide explains the difference between subscriptions and API billing.
  • Workflow features and integrations. Projects organise context. Skills package repeatable instructions and resources. Research supports information-gathering workflows. Integrations connect Claude to supported workplace tools. Check official product and support pages before buying a plan for one specific feature.
  • Trust, status, and support resources. Anthropic publishes service status at status.claude.com, trust and compliance material at trust.anthropic.com, and help content at support.anthropic.com.

Claude model API prices

API billing is token-based. These rates are per million tokens.

Model Main role API price Context and output notes
Opus 4.7 Flagship model $5 input / $25 output 1M context window
Sonnet 4.6 Best balance $3 input / $15 output 1M context window; 128K max output
Haiku 4.5 Fastest and cheapest line $1 input / $5 output Check the model docs for context and output limits

Prompt caching gives 90% off cached input. Batch API gives 50% off both input and output tokens.

Constitutional AI and safety stance

Constitutional AI is Anthropic’s method for training a model to follow explicit principles rather than relying only on human preference labels. In simplified terms, a model drafts and critiques answers against a written constitution, then training pushes it toward helpful, honest, and harmless behaviour. This does not mean Claude is always correct, politically neutral, or safe in every context. It means Anthropic documents a steering approach intended to make Claude follow stated principles and reject unsafe requests more consistently. Anthropic’s Constitutional AI research and public material on Claude’s constitution are the primary company references.

ASL

Anthropic’s shorthand for AI Safety Level thresholds and controls.

The other distinctive piece is Anthropic’s Responsible Scaling Policy. It describes how the company intends to test, secure, and deploy more capable systems as risk increases. The policy uses AI Safety Level language, often shortened to ASL. The basic idea is that higher-capability systems should face stronger evaluations, release gates, and security controls. The public Responsible Scaling Policy gives customers, policymakers, and researchers a way to inspect Anthropic’s stated safety process. It does not remove the need for independent scrutiny. It also does not guarantee that every refusal, release decision, or product limit will feel right to every user.

Funding and revenue

Abstract ecosystem illustration
Abstract ecosystem illustration

Anthropic is one of the most heavily funded private AI companies. It has announced major partnerships and investments with Amazon and Google, along with funding from institutional investors. Anthropic does not publish full audited revenue statements as a public company would. Treat leaked revenue numbers and private-market valuations as estimates unless Anthropic confirms them. The practical business point is simple: Anthropic is not just a research lab. It is a commercial AI vendor with large compute costs, cloud partners, and pressure to turn Claude usage into durable revenue.

Business model

Where Anthropic’s revenue comes from

Consumer subscriptionsIndividual Claude plans
Team and enterprise seatsWorkspaces, admin, trust, and compliance needs
API usageToken-based developer consumption
Strategic distributionCloud and platform partnerships

This mix explains why Anthropic speaks to developers, individual users, enterprises, and policymakers at the same time.

Leadership and team

Anthropic’s leadership combines research credibility, product execution, policy work, and enterprise operations. Public roles can change, so use anthropic.com/company as the official reference for current leadership.

Person Public role Why it matters
Dario Amodei CEO and co-founder Represents Anthropic’s research direction and safety strategy.
Daniela Amodei President and co-founder Connects operations, hiring, customer work, and company execution.
Jared Kaplan Co-founder and science leader Associated with scaling research and large-model behaviour.
Mike Krieger Product leader Helps turn Claude from model capability into usable software.

The team is larger than its public leaders. Anthropic employs researchers, engineers, policy specialists, security staff, product managers, sales teams, support teams, and trust specialists. That mix matters because Claude is not only a model checkpoint. It is a service with infrastructure, safety review, documentation, customer support, account systems, billing, enterprise controls, and incident response.

Honest take

Anthropic is a serious AI lab with credible research depth, a clear safety identity, and a product many professionals use for writing, coding, analysis, and document-heavy work. Its strongest asset is the combination of model research, safety policy, developer tooling, and a product surface that non-technical users can adopt quickly.

The trade-off is real. A safety-forward vendor can produce more refusals, move cautiously in higher-risk areas, and change product behaviour as policies shift. A fast-growing private company with major cloud partners also has commercial incentives. Treat Anthropic as a capable, safety-focused AI vendor. Do not treat it as a public utility, a neutral standards body, or a substitute for your own review process.

Pick when

  • You want a strong general assistant for writing and analysis.
  • You value a vendor that publishes safety policy and research.
  • You need both consumer access and an API path for development.
  • Your team wants trust, admin, and support material for procurement.

Skip when

  • You need open-weight models that run fully on your own hardware.
  • You cannot accept model refusals in edge-case workflows.
  • You need a guarantee that one feature will stay unchanged.
  • You require public-company financial disclosures.
  1. Separate company claims from product behaviour

Anthropic’s policies explain intent. Your tests show whether Claude works for your use case.

  2. Check official status and support channels

For outages, account issues, and billing questions, use Anthropic’s pages rather than third-party commentary.

  3. Review the right surface

The Claude app, Claude API, Claude Code, and enterprise workspace can behave differently because they serve different workflows.

FAQ

Is Anthropic the same as Claude?

No. Anthropic is the company. Claude is the AI assistant, model family, and product ecosystem made by Anthropic. The official Claude product is claude.ai. c-ai.chat is independent and explains Claude from a third-party perspective.

Who owns Anthropic?

Anthropic is privately held. It has founders, employees, venture investors, and strategic investors, including major cloud partners. Amazon and Google are important partners and investors, but that does not mean either company owns the Claude product. For legal, investment, or procurement questions, use Anthropic’s official company and trust materials.

Is Claude AI free?

Claude has a Free plan at $0 with daily usage limits. Paid individual plans include Pro at $20/month, or $17/month with annual billing, and Max from $100/month. Team Standard is $25/seat/month, or $20/seat/month with annual billing. Team Premium is $125/seat/month, or $100/seat/month with annual billing. Enterprise starts with a $20/seat base plus API rates. Verify details on the official Claude pricing page.

Does Anthropic offer an API?

Yes. Anthropic offers the Claude API through its platform and developer docs. API pricing is token-based, not the same as a Claude subscription. Prompt caching gives 90% off cached input tokens. Batch API gives 50% off both input and output tokens.

What makes Anthropic different from other AI labs?

Anthropic’s public identity is unusually tied to AI safety. Constitutional AI, the Responsible Scaling Policy, model evaluations, and ASL language are core parts of how the company explains itself. That does not make Anthropic risk-free. It means safety process and documentation are central to its brand and product strategy.

Can I invest in Anthropic stock?

Anthropic does not have a public stock ticker. It is a private company backed by founders, employees, venture investors, and strategic partners. Buying shares in a partner company is not the same as directly owning Anthropic. Treat financial claims about private AI companies carefully because full public disclosures are limited.

Where should I go if Claude is down?

Use status.claude.com for official service-status updates. For account, billing, login, or plan issues, use support.anthropic.com. Third-party guides can explain patterns, but they cannot fix your Anthropic account.

Is c-ai.chat affiliated with Anthropic?

No. c-ai.chat is an independent guide to Claude AI by Anthropic. We are not Anthropic, we do not run claude.ai, and we do not provide official customer support. We link to official Anthropic pages when the official source matters.
