The Claude desktop app lets you use Claude on your computer with the same account you use at claude.ai; start from official Claude or Anthropic domains, then use this independent Claude AI guide to avoid fake downloads, login traps, and setup mistakes.

This page focuses on setup, sign-in, and account safety. If you want to compare plans before installing anything, see our Claude pricing guide. If you need broader account help, use our Claude FAQ.

The fastest way to sign in
Use the official Claude website first. Then open the desktop app after you know the account works.
Open the official Claude site
Go to claude.ai. Do not start from a search ad, shortened link, browser extension pop-up, or unofficial download page.
Use the original sign-in method
Sign in with the same method you used to create the account: email, Google, Apple, or your organisation’s SSO. Switching methods can create a separate account or trigger an account mismatch.
Confirm Claude works in the browser
Send a short test prompt. If Claude works in the browser, your account is active. The remaining problem is probably local to the app, device, browser handoff, network, or permissions.
Open the desktop app
Launch the app from your operating system and sign in with the same account. If the app redirects you to a browser, complete that step and return to the app.
Check service status
If sign-in hangs or Claude does not load, check status.claude.com before resetting passwords or reinstalling the app.
The desktop app is not a separate Claude account. Your plan, workspace, usage limits, and available features come from your Claude account, not from the device alone.
Example
Problem: the desktop app opens a browser but never returns to the app.
Likely fix: set a default browser, allow Claude cookies, disable strict content blockers for the sign-in test, and try the handoff again.
Where the login pages live

Claude has several legitimate sign-in surfaces. They serve different jobs. Consumer Claude, team workspaces, and developer API access do not always use the same entry point.
| Login surface | Use it for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| claude.ai | Claude web, desktop app sign-in, individual accounts, and most day-to-day use. | The address bar should show claude.ai with a valid browser security indicator. |
| claude.com/login | Claude account sign-in through Anthropic’s Claude domain. | Use this only when you intentionally started from an official Claude site or app flow. |
| platform.claude.com | API access, developer billing, model documentation, and platform settings. | API access is separate from normal desktop chat usage. If you only want the desktop app, start at claude.ai. |
The safest rule is simple: if you want to chat with Claude, start at claude.ai. If you want API keys or usage billing for an application, use Anthropic’s developer platform. If you want to compare desktop and browser capabilities, see our guide to Claude features.
Work accounts can add another layer. Your company may require SSO, managed identity, device policies, or administrator approval. The desktop app can be installed correctly and still fail until your organisation grants access.
When sign-in fails

Most Claude desktop sign-in problems come from a small set of causes. Work through them before changing plans, creating a new account, or repeatedly resetting your password.
- Wrong email or sign-in method: use the exact method used to create the account. Email login, Google, Apple, and SSO can behave as separate routes.
- Stale saved credential: open your password manager and choose the exact claude.ai entry. Reset the password only if the saved credential fails.
- MFA problem: check your authenticator app, device time, backup method, or Anthropic’s account-recovery flow.
- Availability issue: Claude access depends on location and policy. Avoid VPN workarounds that may violate terms or trigger security checks.
- Browser handoff blocked: allow cookies for official Claude domains, disable strict blockers for the sign-in test, and confirm your default browser is set.
- SSO mismatch: use your work email and organisation SSO route. Ask your admin to confirm that your seat and workspace access are active.
- Network or firewall interference: test on a trusted different network. If it works there, ask IT to allow official Claude and Anthropic domains.
Try first
- Sign in at claude.ai in a browser.
- Use the original sign-in method.
- Check the official status page.
- Disable extensions only for the login test.
Do not start with
- Downloading unofficial installers.
- Entering codes on lookalike domains.
- Creating duplicate accounts.
- Changing paid plans to fix authentication.
If Claude loads in the browser but not on desktop, the issue is usually local. Update the app, restart the device, repeat the browser handoff, and test without a VPN.
If both desktop and browser fail, treat it as an account, workspace, availability, or service-status issue. Write down the exact error message. “Access denied,” “workspace not found,” “too many requests,” and “check your email” point to different fixes.
Securing your account
Treat Claude desktop like any other signed-in productivity app. It can contain work drafts, uploaded documents, code snippets, meeting notes, research, and personal context.
- Enable MFA: use multi-factor authentication where available. An authenticator app is safer than relying only on a password.
- Use a unique password: do not reuse a password from email, cloud storage, code hosting, or your company login.
- Audit active sessions: sign out of devices you no longer use, especially shared computers, old laptops, and borrowed machines.
- Review connected apps: check integrations and workspace tools that request access. Grant only the permissions you need.
- Separate personal and work accounts: use your organisation’s approved workspace for company material.
- Check trust materials: for security, compliance, and trust information, use trust.anthropic.com.
- Be careful with uploads: do not upload secrets, private keys, regulated data, or customer information unless your plan, workspace policy, and legal basis support it.
Desktop apps can feel more private than browser tabs because they sit on your computer. That feeling can be misleading. The same account, workspace, retention settings, policy controls, and service rules still apply.
If you administer Claude for a team, check seat access, SSO rules, workspace membership, and employee offboarding. A desktop app left signed in on an unmanaged device can create avoidable risk.

The honest take
Claude desktop is useful if you want Claude as a dedicated app instead of another browser tab. Setup should be simple: start from claude.ai, use the correct sign-in method, confirm the account works, then open the app.
If that path fails, the cause is usually credentials, SSO, MFA, browser handoff, network filtering, availability, or service status. Do not trust random installers, search ads, or lookalike login pages.
Claude is made by Anthropic. The official product lives on Claude and Anthropic-owned domains. c-ai.chat is independent, so our advice is practical: use the official entry point, secure the account, and troubleshoot the exact failure instead of guessing.
