What Claude Cowork is
Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s tool for handing Claude a real piece of work and letting it execute the whole thing. It uses the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, but aimed at knowledge work rather than software engineering, and without needing a terminal. Instead of trading messages back and forth, you give Cowork an objective — “analyse these five reports and build a summary deck,” say — and it plans and completes the steps.
Agentic, not a chat room
Cowork executes multi-step tasks and produces files. It is not a shared team workspace.
How it works
The agent loop and any code execution run on Anthropic-managed servers, in an isolated environment, and your sessions and files are saved to your Claude account — not on your machine. A practical consequence: the work keeps going after you step away. In Anthropic’s words, you can close your laptop and Claude keeps working; you come back to a finished draft, spreadsheet or deck. Tasks that need local files, your browser, or computer use still require the Claude Desktop app and that device to stay available.

Plans and platforms
Cowork is a paid feature, available on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. It runs on web and desktop, with mobile in beta.
